~ Journeymen Training ~

Training at Local 73 does not stop after apprenticeship. We offer an extensive Journeymen Training Program that keeps our membership in step with our changing industry.

Certification is the wave of the future in the piping industry. Local 73 offers certification training for valve technician repair and welding as well as training for hazardous material handling, AOV maintenance, rigging, tube bending, actuator maintenance, safety relief valve training, and drafting.

Safety in the workplace is a top priority and is ensured through education and training. Our members are trained in CPR and First Aid, how to work in confined spaces, asbestos awareness and a 10 hour OSHA Outreach Program is offered to all of our members.

Valve Technician Certification Program

The United Association has addressed industry needs by developing an extensive program for skilled and experienced UA Journeymen in the proper maintenance and repair of the numerous types of valves found in industrial piping applications today. The UA Valve Technician Certification Program has been designed to ensure that UA Journeymen are able to take on any valve repair problem they may encounter. This specialized training comes at no cost to contractors or plant owners.

The UA valve-training program is a intensive course of study that includes classroom and hands-on instruction using the latest materials, equipment and valves. UA Journeymen are instructed in the proper techniques of disassembly, inspection and repair for the different types of valves in use at industrial facilities. In the process these craftsmen learn how to use valve-conditioning equipment and become skilled in the application of sensitive calibrating tools.

UA Local 73 and the training facility undergo an extensive independent third-party audit by the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company. This audit is to ensure that all training personnel, tools, equipment and valves used in teaching the course are in complete compliance with the strict requirements of this UA valve-training program.

Anyone successfully completing this certification will also receive certification from the Electrical Power Research Institute. EPRI is a regulatory agency for the energy industry, specifically the nuclear industry.

UA Local 73 was the first local in New York State and one of the first UA Local's in the northeast to take on this certification, promoting it and using it throughout the country. We have bridged many relationships between contractors and end users so that our membership's skill in this area is always requested.

UA Weld Certification Program

The UA Weld Certification Program was created with the goal to provide total user satisfaction providing pre-tested, certified and immediately available journey level welders across the United States and Canada.

UA Local 73 has been a pioneer in initiating and using this program since 1995. Under this program, welders are tested on the welding processes most commonly used on a majority of construction projects. Welders can seek certification in all or any of these processes.

To keep absolute integrity in a program of this kind, several safeguards are built in:
  • All tests are conducted by third party testing representatives, who are recognized welding inspectors
  • All completed welds are x-rayed and read by an independent laboratory
  • Certified testing procedures are developed and maintained by the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau who      represent the UA and our contractors on code-making bodies and committees as they affect our industry

  • As a union contractor affiliated with the United Association, this program offers many advantages to increase competitiveness within the industry:

  • Certified testing procedures are developed and maintained by the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau who represent the UA and our contractors on code-making bodies and committees as they affect our industry

  • Reduced bid prices on welding specifications

  • Cost free weld testing

  • Quality proven craftsmanship

  • Meets ASME Standards

  • Hassle free record keeping

  • Nationwide pool of welders with the same testing criterion

  • UA Local 73 is responsible for all weld test materials, consumables as well as the facility. All testing data is available to the individual, the contractor and the end user upon request. This also includes x-ray film, which is part of the permanent record.

The list of certified welders, contractors, end users and projects utilizing this program has grown rapidly and will continue to do so. Customers are given a quality product; contractors are ensured a skilled workforce who gets the job done right, on time, and frequently under budget. UA members are in demand because they are the best skilled workers in the industry.
